Rainbow Falls in Hilo

Big island in Hawaii (a quick 45 minute flight from Honolulu) is the only island in Hawaii with 2 active volcanoes, 8 different climate zones - you can snowboard and hit the beach in the same day, and finding nemo was based off of a coral reef in Big Island. We went for our first family vacation, a friends wedding, and a site visit to Mauna Lani in November 2023. The island’s landscape is super unique - desert in half and lush tropics in the other half. I highly recommend it for a relaxing vacation with tons of activities in between if you’re into that. There is something for everyone and I can’t wait to go back some day.

  • Mauna Lani - my top recommendation in terms of food quality, service quality and location

  • Mauna Kea - this is great for families, food is not great but the beach is pristine, one of the largest on the island

  • Snorkel every time you get the chance

Hilo is the main port city

  • Hawaiin style cafe for fast food thats popular in Hawaii
